Ingredients

For the Cake Base
  • 65 g flour (½ cup)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 30 g cold butter, diced (2 tablespoons)
  • 2 pieces eggs
  • 120 ml milk (½ cup)
  • 7.5 g melted butter (½ tablespoon)
  • 7.5 g olive oil (½ tablespoon)
For the Filling
  • 2 pieces shallots or 1 medium yellow onion
  • 450 g ground meat (ideally 15-20% fat)
  • ½ teaspoon taco seasoning or a mixture of paprika, garlic, oregano, and a pinch of chili
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • a handful fresh parsley, chopped
  • 120 g grated cheddar (½ cup)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the cold butter and work it with your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs. Then, add the eggs and milk, mixing to form a smooth dough.
  2. Heat the melted butter and olive oil in a pan. Add the chopped shallots and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until they become soft and light brown.
  3. Next, add the ground meat and cook for about 7 minutes, stirring until it’s golden brown.
  4. Season the meat mixture with taco seasoning, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix thoroughly and then stir in the chopped parsley.
Assembly
  1. In a greased baking dish, even out half of the meat mixture and sprinkle cheddar on top.
  2. Layer the remaining meat mixture, sprinkle with the leftover cheddar, and pour the prepared dough over everything.
Baking
  1. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for about 30 minutes, until the surface is golden brown and firm to the touch.
Serving
  1. Serve hot, slicing into portions, paired with crisp sides like a fresh salad or hearty fried potatoes.

Notes

Cheeseburger Cake can be served warm, sliced into wedges like a pie. For a complete meal, pair it with a fresh side salad featuring crisp greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers, drizzled with a light vinaigrette. Alternatively, serve it alongside hearty fried potatoes. Condiments like mustard and ketchup can be offered for added flavor.
