  • Dash to taste salt Balances sweetness.
  • Cream for whipping (optional) For topping, if desired.

Method

Preparation
  1. Add 2 cups of milk to a medium saucepan over medium to low heat.
  2. Warm the milk gently, stirring occasionally to prevent it from burning.
  3. Add in the cocoa powder and maple syrup (or honey) and whisk everything together until it’s completely combined and smooth.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a dash of salt for a little extra flavor.
  5. If desired, whip up some cream to top off your hot chocolate.
Serving
  1. Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mugs.
  2. If you’ve whipped cream, add a generous dollop on top and sprinkle with cocoa powder or cinnamon for visual appeal.

Notes

Chill it out for an iced treat. To make it minty, add a few drops of peppermint extract. For a dairy-free version, use almond, oat, or coconut milk.
