Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce Provides natural sweetness and moisture without sugar.
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder Gives deep chocolate flavor.
  • ¼ cup maple syrup or honey Adds a touch of sweetness and stickiness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder Helps the brownies rise slightly.
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips or nuts Optional for added texture.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line the baking dish with parchment paper (if using).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the applesauce, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, baking powder, and salt. Mix thoroughly until you have a smooth batter.
  3. If desired, fold in the dark chocolate chips or nuts for extra texture and flavor.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the edges look set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.
  6. Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing into squares and serving.

Notes

For a richer chocolate flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder. Let the brownies cool completely for the best texture; they continue to firm up as they cool. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days or refrigerate for about a week.
