Ingredients

For the cake layers
  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 100 ml water
  • 100 ml milk
  • 80 g unsalted butter for the cake layers
  • 4 large eggs for the cake layers
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
For the creamy filling
  • 500 ml milk for the filling
  • 150 g sugar
  • 100 g all-purpose flour for the filling
  • 2 large eggs for the filling
  • 180 g unsalted butter for the filling

Method

Preparation
  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Once melted, add the milk, water, and salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder together.
  3. Gradually add the flour mixture to the saucepan, stirring constantly until you have a smooth dough.
  4. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (around 400 degrees Fahrenheit).
  5. Once the dough has cooled slightly, add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
  6. Line a 25 cm (10-inch) round cake tin with parchment paper and pour half of your batter into the prepared tin.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the cake layer is golden brown.
  8. Repeat the process with the remaining batter to bake the second cake layer.
Creamy Filling
  1. In a bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until well mixed.
  2. Gradually add the flour, stirring to ensure no lumps remain.
  3. In another saucepan, heat the milk again and slowly add the egg mixture, stirring continuously until thickened.
  4. Let the creamy filling cool slightly, then mix it with whipped butter until smooth and creamy.
Assembly
  1. Spread the creamy filling over one of the cooled cake layers and place the second layer on top.
  2. Refrigerate the assembled cake for about 2 hours to set.
  3. After chilling, slice the cake and serve, optionally dusting with powdered sugar.

Notes

For best results, ensure your butter and eggs are at room temperature. You can add a splash of vanilla extract or lemon zest to the creamy filling for extra flavor. This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
