Ingredients

For the potatoes
  • 1 kg potatoes, boiled and sliced (about 2.2 lbs)
  • 750 g smoked meat, sliced (about 1.65 lbs)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 60 g butter (about 4 tablespoons)
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 1 cube vegetable bouillon
  • 250 ml water (about 1 cup)
  • 150 ml whipping cream (about 2/3 cup)
  • 300 g finely grated cheese (about 3 cups)
  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed
  • Butter for greasing

Method

Preparation
  1. Fry the chopped onion in butter until golden brown.
  2. Sprinkle in the plain flour and stir for a minute.
  3. Gradually pour in 250 ml of water (setting aside a little to mix with the vegetable bouillon cube), stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Add 150 ml of whipping cream and the dissolved vegetable bouillon. Stir well and bring to another boil.
  5. Stir in the pressed garlic and half of the finely grated cheese until the cheese is melted and the sauce is well combined.
Assembly
  1. In a greased baking bowl, layer the salted and peppered potato slices, followed by the sliced smoked meat.
  2. Pour the prepared sauce over the layered potatoes and meat.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top.
Baking
  1. Place the dish in a preheated oven at 175 degrees C (350 degrees F) and bake for about 20 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

To serve, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to sit for a few minutes before serving. This dish pairs beautifully with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives for added flavor and presentation. You can substitute the smoked meat with other options like shredded rotisserie chicken or a plant-based alternative. The dish can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator before baking. A lighter option for whipping cream is half-and-half or a non-dairy cream substitute.
